Target of the Week — Devotional: Love Your Bully

April 3rd, 2010

After you’ve heard “Target of the Week,” check out this devotional thought. (If you haven’t heard the episode, check out the Media Player. You can also find a station in your area.)

By Catherine Wilson

Matthew had a tough time with bullies in today’s show and decided that his only way out was revenge. Later, he did the right thing by apologizing to Vance, but even then, Vance didn’t give up his bullying ways.

Matthew’s dilemma reminds me of two kids I know named Thomas and Michael. One day at school, Michael was waiting in line for the drinking fountain when Thomas pushed him out of the way. Michael was upset, but when he went home that day, his mother suggested that maybe Thomas just needed a friend. The next day Michael talked with Thomas, and found out that both of them liked spaceships and water balloon fights. Today, the two are best friends. They build enormous Lego spaceships together and they’re always on the same side in water balloon fights.

In the Bible, Jesus says to “love your enemies, do good to those who hate you.” Sometimes, a bully just needs a friend. And sometimes, a bully is just a bully and being their friend won’t make them treat you any better. But, however a bully acts, we know that revenge isn’t the answer.

When you treat a bully with love, you might gain a friend, like Michael did with Thomas, or gain respect, like Matthew did with Vance. But even if you don’t get either of those things, you will please God because you treated others as Jesus did. And if nothing else works, you can always pray for a bully.

Did you ever have an enemy that God helped to change into a friend? I’d love to hear about it on the blog!

Nice Devotion People! I really liked it, but since i’m homeschooled, I don’t really have to worry about bullies. Rock On Odyssey!

That was ok, still looking to see how the new AIO is going to evolve. Still not totally sold out, but have not totally given up in the new AIO yet. I still like the old AIO’s better. I still wonder about Eugene’s wife and what is the inspiration station all about? Oh and does Wooton still write those comic strips, live in a house with a slide, and have a tree house?

  • Me on April 3rd, 2010 - 1:48pm

Target Of The Week was great! Chang Fang was the best! Bring him back Odyssey! I loved the baseball sound effects during the little league games; very realistic! Great job! It was good to hear an episode written by Marshal Younger. I hope there are more to come in the future!

  • Bailey on April 4th, 2010 - 8:30am

Hey, is anyone else think that Vance sounds a great deal like Jason Earles? or that it might actually be him? just wondering.

  • Gracie on April 5th, 2010 - 9:31am

This has nothing to do with the devotional at all… but I just wanted to say while you are creating new families and everything, could you please make a homeschool family? My entire family is homeschooled and we all love Odyssey. A homeschool family would be really cool. Please please please make a homeschool family! Love you Odyssey!

  • becca on April 5th, 2010 - 10:38am

    Dear AIO,
I was wondering if Bernard will be back to odyssey? By the way the last two weekends episodes have been really GOOD! 🙂 Keep going! Also love that Wooten is still around!

During the second half of my Freshman year to the second half of my softmore year, I was enemies with a girl at my church. The whole reason why we became enimies was because of a boy. Even though the girl is still going out with the guy that seperated us in the first place, at least we are aquatences now. We both apoligized to each other for the way we were treating each other.

  • J.R.C on April 5th, 2010 - 5:56pm

Yeah, I think it would be really cool if they added a home school family!!! I’m home shooled too. So that would be really awesome. 🙂

  • Sharon on April 5th, 2010 - 6:39pm

I really liked this brodcast I think it was the best one so far. I personally have never been bullied but when my brother was younger he was bullied a lot. Now most kids his age leave him alone since at fourteen he is six foot one.Bye the way those kids who use to bully him now literally look up to him.

  • sam on April 5th, 2010 - 6:56pm

i agree with erin i was sure that vancer must be played by jason earles. i love AIO not huge on all the new characters but i guess i just need to warm up to them

    Dear Gracie,
Have you heard the episode YOU GO TO SCHOOL WHERE? well that deals with homeschooling. It was on the podcast earlier.

  • Connie fan on April 6th, 2010 - 1:41pm

    Dear AIO,
When will you be airing Aloha OY? Tons of people like that episode and I have not heard it in a long time. 🙁

  • WES B. on April 6th, 2010 - 4:34pm

Lol, in response to Gracie and her inquiry upon being a home school family in the town of Odyssey. The writers has already attempted that all the way back in 1989, back in Odyssey’s second year of existence! The episode was called, “You Go to School Where?” but was never released even up to this day because it was an inaccurate representation of homeschooling. Keep in mind homeschooling was something new back in the 80s and Paul McCusker wasn’t homeschooled so he had a vague idea of homeschool.

  • WES B. on April 6th, 2010 - 4:37pm

Oh my goodness Becca, I’ve been wondering the same thing! That’s what I’m not really liking about this new album, they’re leaving some characters in the dust. Also, Bernard won’t be coming back I emailed Odyssey asking them and they said the only one’s who will return in the future albums are Whit, Connie, Eugene and Wooton. Of course they have Whit, Connie and Eugene considering that they’re the big top three. And of course who are they to leave Wooton to the dust lol. He’s the most popular.

  • WES B. on April 6th, 2010 - 4:38pm

I agree Joshua, Odyssey is alsome! 😉

  • WES B. on April 6th, 2010 - 4:39pm

Ugh, don’t y’all hate typos? I’m probably the only guy who proof-reads this stuff before I click that grand button that proudly proclaims, “SUBMIT!”

    ~Wes B.

  • WES B. on April 6th, 2010 - 4:42pm

Odyssey should have done an Easter episode. That would have been fun. 🙂 Odyssey easter egg hunt lol. Hmm, I hope actor Corey Burton will still be around. Please don’t get rid of him Odyssey! Nor Edwin Blackgaard. ‘Cause I now this new theater guy’s movin’ in to town.

  • Anonymous on April 6th, 2010 - 4:44pm

    odyssey is awesome! 🙂

Ok is this Nelson the same Nelson from Kidsboro? Also if the actress who plays Nelson sister is playing Matthew’s sister then is she going to be Nelson’s sister too?
    Ok thats it 😀

  • rose on April 7th, 2010 - 6:56am

    It was funny.

  • Joshua on April 7th, 2010 - 7:59am

Question: when will they post the top ten videos for the act like odyssey contest?

  • Odysseyfan#1 on April 7th, 2010 - 8:14am

Lisa, Eugene is still married, though she might never be mentioned (or rarely be mentioned). She hasn’t been a big character. Yes, wooton still lives in a house with a slide.

Lindsey S., he is risen indeed!

    Gracie, I’m homeschooled too!

Becca, the actor of bernard (Dave Madden) has moved, and will most likely be phased out, but you never know…

  • Hannah on April 7th, 2010 - 10:14am

Hi I hear alot of people looking for the old charachters but they can’t be around forever because the people who were in middle school 20 yrs. ago grow up and I think you guys are doing a great job thinking up of new ones

and AIO guys i have an idea for a episode how would i send it?

    thanks! 🙂

  • Agent 03 on April 7th, 2010 - 12:45pm

And I agree with mael…….Bring the mysteries like novacom! But not the ones like game for mystery…..that one is really really lame!

  • Odysseyfan#1 on April 7th, 2010 - 5:14pm

Someone, Yes, Aubrey is a homeschooler (See it in “Bethany’s Flood”).

  • Connie fan on April 7th, 2010 - 7:09pm

I like Game for a Mysery. I think that Novacom was really long and I think that the shorter 1/2 hour episodes are better because it still keeps you in suspense and you are not kept in suspence for several years. I like it that the episode is more based on science and not as much on the creepy bad people novacom still creeps me out!! I like that the episode was not lame!! The game goes along with real life, with all of the new video games coming out.

  • Connie fan on April 7th, 2010 - 7:11pm

When are we going hear more Jones & Parker episodes? I like them!!:)

  • ben on April 8th, 2010 - 8:52am

to wes B they have released “you go to school where?” i forget the name of the album but its in with the rest that they sort of baried under the carpet.

  • Lindsey s. on April 8th, 2010 - 10:21am

They got rid of Bernard! He was one of my favorite characters. I can’t believe that Focus has gotten rid of 96% of the characters that Odyssey fans love.

Why are you doing this Odyssey Team?! I know you want to reach the younger audience, but the same time you are losing most of the fans that have been listening for years (like me). I think you should of just ended Odyssey and started a new series instead of completely changing the Odyssey everyone knows and loves. 🙁 ;-(

  • Lindsey s. on April 8th, 2010 - 10:21am

I like Rodney much better than this bully.

  • HORSE LOVER on April 8th, 2010 - 1:00pm

I won’t say what all I think about so many of the old characters missing because everyone else is. Instead I’ll try to just make the best of it. PLEASE INTERVIEW JASON EARLES! Interview all the newer actors, actually. I would love to hear from them.

When you think of what God really went through for us, it is amazing to really see how much he would sacrafice for us. All of that suffereing, he could have run away at any moment! But he didn’t because he loved us. He withstood the taunting and the pain because he loved us and wanted us to know who he was!

Do you mean Lucy Shultz? She grew up I think.

  • kels on April 13th, 2010 - 4:58pm

Though I really do enjoy the new Odysseys, the changes are hard. But with losing characters, we are all aware that changes do happen. Good changes happen too…yes, Eugine would change with having a kid, but serious, isn’t change supposed to help us? I think Eugine could still be his happy scientist type even with a baby, the baby would just really liven things up so it’s not just the Parker family all the time. I know that doesn’t relate to this episode…oh well.

  • kels on April 13th, 2010 - 5:00pm

PS Is everybody who writes on here home schooled?Yes, I can join the club.

I tried to make the most of it by being polite, and guess what?! She and I are the best of friends! I’m not homeschooled!! But I wish I were…:( Mitch was sent to Budapest (sp?) for FBI training. He and Connie were about to get married, but they decided against it.

I’m wondering how a podcast about “Target of the Week” turned into one about people telling everyone else on here they were homeschooled(except for several exceptions). I like playing with LEGOS too,(even though I’m in my teens) and I LOVE WATER BALLOON FIGHTS!! And rubber band fights. Since I’m homeschooled like half the population on here, I’ve never encountered any bullies. Good thing, though. For my would-be-bully. You don’t pick on me. I’m a wild shield maiden from the North.
    Lady Eowyn
P.S. I’m kidding about the shield-maiden thing! (LOL)
