Devotional: Grandma’s Visit

July 26th, 2010

After you’ve heard “Grandma’s Visit,” check out this devotional thought. (If you haven’t heard the episode, check out the Media Player. You can also find a station in your area.)

Dinner?

Dinner?

By Catherine Wilson

In “Grandma’s Visit,” when the Parker family got to know their strange relatives, it sounded a little too familiar to me. I took some unusual vacations when I was a kid. While other kids were going to Disney World or to a cabin on a lake, I was going to my Grandma and Grandpa’s house. When I got there, the table was always set with raw hamburger, cabbage boiled in lemon juice, hummus, spinach turnovers, and mashed garbanzo beans. These are the kinds of foods that my grandparents ate on a regular basis! After watching all the adults eat this strange dinner and eating all the plain rice that I could stand, it was time for me to do the dishes. Who would call this a vacation?

My grandpa has since died and my grandma can’t cook by herself anymore. And guess what? I really miss those big meals at Grandma and Grandpa’s. At the time, I spent way too long complaining to myself about the weird food. Now I look back and miss the good conversations, and the fun games that I played with my cousins.

You’ll never guess how I connect with my Grandma now. I’ve decided that I really like all that “weird food” now (well, except for raw hamburger). When I go see my Grandma I ask her to help me make stuffed cabbage, hummus, and spinach turn-overs. I never would have thought of those “weird foods” as something I would like, not to mention make it for myself and my friends!

I’ve realized that I love my family, especially the “weird” stuff. That’s really what makes them unique and special. Just like the Parkers, it took me a while to realize how cool my weird family was.

Do you have any unusual family traditions? What does your family do to stay connected? Let us know in the comments below.

You should bring in someone that is like Regis Blackgaard. You have brought in a few people like him, but they haven’t stayed. Yes it would not be a good idea to keep evil in Odyssey, but he did add a little spice to the plot line.

That is actually really helpful to me because at the end of this week my family is going to see family in an extremely small town with nothing too do. And we have to drive 11 hours to get there and I am not looking really forward to it at all. But I don’t want to take for granted the time with my grandparents because I don’t know how long they have.So I want to make the best of this trip. So thanks a bunch!!!

I just read this over with my mom, and it has special meaning now because I just saw my Grandma for what will probably be the last time ever. And, I found out that this devotion was actually going to be posted on the day I was visiting my Grandma. I made sure to ask her some questions about our family history that I may never have the chance to ask again.

Dear Mandie yes Raw meat can make you SICK like you can end up in the hospital sick! That does not sound fun so raw meat has to be cooked to at lest 160 degrees F

  • lady eowyn on December 2nd, 2010 - 9:12pm

Why any sane person would eat knowingly eat raw meat is beyond me. Besides, it tastes NASTY! Mashed garbanzo beans doesn’t sound to bad. I like garbanzo beans. 🙂 I wonder what nationality the writer’s grandparents were. That would shed some light as to why they had a taste for raw meat. BLEAH!!! 😛

    Hello?!?!?

  • Gianna on February 3rd, 2016 - 1:31pm

Hi, I love baking and cooking better than eating! (of course, you have to eat of you’ll starve).

  • Julianna on February 5th, 2016 - 4:26pm

Gianna, Lol. What do you like to bake and cook?

  • Gianna on February 5th, 2016 - 5:46pm

Ah, well, today my grandmotheer was leaving to go back to PA, and I made apple cinnamon bread. It is heavenly and it was like a good bye treat. My grampa was unable to come because of his work schedule.
I am famous for cinnamon bread. I haven’t made it for a few months.
I like to make pumpkin bread too. Lol. These are all fall treats. They are tastey, though.

  • gianna on February 8th, 2016 - 11:10am

I watch cooking shows. I watch Cook’s Country on Create, one of the PBS channels. Oh, I also watch America’s test Kitchen too.

  • Gianna on February 9th, 2016 - 1:37pm

Has anyone ever tasted brussel sprouts? They taste like cabbage! 😛

  • Julianna on February 10th, 2016 - 6:11pm

gianna, I love homemade anything, especially bread or desserts!!

  • GIANNA on February 11th, 2016 - 11:13am

Oh I love making cookies! I don’t make my treats out of a box mix… It’s never as good! I make birthday cakes for people’s birthdays! Even mine! Lol! 🙂

  • Julianna on February 11th, 2016 - 7:03pm

I like doing recipes out of a cookbook. Sometimes they come out weird or messy, but still good.

  • Gisela on February 12th, 2016 - 10:49am

Yes, I my recipes in a cookbook too. A few days ago, I made pound cake. The day before Ash Wensday. It is wonderful! It’s secret ingredient is honey.

  • Gisela on February 12th, 2016 - 1:26pm

Julianna, this is Gianna, just I changed my name. 🙂

  • Julianna on February 12th, 2016 - 4:48pm

Oh my word! I just received a cookbook and it is huge!! It is 4 volumes because of braille. lol.
Gianna, Okay. I saw that on the newest post. but thanks. I love pound cake!! I love sweets!!

  • Gisela on February 13th, 2016 - 8:28am

I like sweets too. I like making Cookies A LOT.

  • starwarsfan8 on February 13th, 2016 - 2:27pm

Hello? I totally LOOOOOOOOOOVE cooking!! 🙂 can I be on here??

  • GISELA on February 14th, 2016 - 11:52am

They make cookbooks in braille? Cool! 🙂
The pound cake was called Vanilla Pound Cake. It had a whole tablespoon of vanilla! If only there was a way to exchange recipes. I would give you that one!

  • GISELA on February 14th, 2016 - 11:54am

Oh, yah, do you have allergies? I am allergic to all nuts except peanuts. For Christmas, I got a cookbook of cookies and HALF of them had tree nuts! 🙁

  • Julianna on February 15th, 2016 - 11:19am

    Starwarsfan, Yeah. Welcome!!
Jesella, really? I love nuts!! I am a nut. Lol. I made turkey pop pie and it looked like a cupcake, but it had a filling of potatoes and carrots. I can’t eat fish. And I don’t drink milk. Those are the only things that make me sick. Most of the time, if I eat something that doesn’t agree with me, I get a little sick.

  • Gisela on February 15th, 2016 - 3:58pm

Oh. Pizza Hut Pizza makes me sick! Yuck! It’s so greasy. We had it for dinner tonight. I don’t really like fish. It’s fishy. I don’t really drink milk by itself, but I add it recipes! How do you cook if you are blind? I don’t mean to be rude, but I was just wondering. Were you born blind or did you have an accident? Only answer if you are comfortable. I read a fictional diary of a blind girl and it was interesting! It didn’t answer many of questions though. Did you listen to the episode, Pen Pal

  • Julianna on February 15th, 2016 - 6:22pm

Jesella, No prob! ask away! I was born blind. I can use a microwave with gloves. I like pizza, but homemade. Restaurants sometimes use too much grease. I can use milk in a recipe, but never by itself. What is that episode about? I’m no good with names. What is the diary you read called? Did you tell them in the book club?

  • GISELA on February 16th, 2016 - 8:19am

    Welcome, Starwarsfan8!

  • GISELA on February 16th, 2016 - 10:15am

Julianna: It is when Robyn gets a Pen Pal and she is blind. Robyn doesn’t know what to think, but Melanie and her become good friends. In the end, they are all the best of friends. Oh, did you listen to The Perfect Witness? It was a mystery and it was incredible!
Oh, the diary isn’t in braille, but I should post about it in the book club. Can you eat cheese? It has milk in it. Oh, I LOVE MAKING HOMEMADE PIZZA! It is SOOO good! I will tell you about the diary in the book club!

  • Julianna on February 16th, 2016 - 4:49pm

You could probably get it Braille, Jesella. I forgot to mention that there is a web site where you can get practically any book in digital braille format. I will look up those episodes. remember the characters Lisa and Jenny? My friend and I made homemade pizza and we ate each other’s by mistake!! WE were supposed to eat our own. Okay. I just went there. I will go back later.

  • Gisela on February 17th, 2016 - 9:49am

    That’s funny.

  • Julianna on February 17th, 2016 - 3:38pm

Lol. So, how cold is it in Ohio. Or where you live? It’s going to rain tonight.

  • Gisela on February 18th, 2016 - 1:23pm

Really? Well, here in Ohio, it’s freezing!!! There is about six inches of snow and it is about 30 degrees!!!! Where do you live? Hawaii? I highly doubt it.

  • GISELA on February 24th, 2016 - 10:04am

    Julianna? Starwarsfan8? Anyone here?

  • starwarsfan8 on February 24th, 2016 - 1:10pm

I know all the Catholic prayers? I wish I can eat herb bread. What herbs did you use Jesella?

  • starwarsfan8 on February 27th, 2016 - 8:13am

It is awesome!!! It’s like a camping place for Catholic familys where you camp for a week. It’s in Ohio!

  • gisela on February 29th, 2016 - 11:34am

Julianna, well, I used: Italian Seasoning, Dried Garlic, and ooh, I can’t remember the others. I sprinkled the round loaf with parmesan cheese and more Italian Seasoning on the top. The little bit of cheese melted on the top, and it was wonderful. I really wish you all could use it…

  • Julianna on February 29th, 2016 - 4:52pm

Jesella, I love parasean cheese. I can not spell it.

  • gisela on March 1st, 2016 - 9:31am

I just made a chocolate cake for my sisters birthday! It turned out great and is the first cake I’ve made.

  • Julianna on March 8th, 2016 - 4:26pm

    hi guys.
starwars8, Yummy! I love chocolate cake! Did you put any frosting or toppings on it. how old is your sister?

  • Gisela on March 9th, 2016 - 7:16am

    @ Starwarsfan8
Delicious! I will be making a cake for Easter. I am still planning it.
Should I make it vanilla with chocolate costing or chocolate cake and chocolate frosting? The choice is mine, and I can’t decide!
I think I will make chocolate. Sounds good? I will making the very day before Easter, so I do not have to choose now.

  • Gisela on March 9th, 2016 - 7:19am

Yesterday, I made chocolate chip scones! They were sweet, but not too sweet, and yummy! And you know what? It only called for two ingredients!
    1. Buttermilk Pancake Mix
    2. Cream
I guess buttermilk pancake mix has more than one ingredient IN it.

  • marie on March 9th, 2016 - 9:09am

Starwarsfan8, that sounds delicious! I am starting to crave chocolate cake!!:)

    Gisela, great breakfast idea!!!:)

  • starwarsfan8 on March 9th, 2016 - 11:27am

@juliana: Yeah it was yummy 🙂 I just put chocolate frosting on it. She is 9.

  • Julianna on March 10th, 2016 - 2:24pm

Jesella, Vanilla cake with chocolate frosting! do that one! I love that recipe. Yummy. Homemade pizza is delicious!

  • marie on March 11th, 2016 - 1:43pm

Ya! it is much better than frozen pizza!!

  • Gisela on March 12th, 2016 - 7:50am

Julianna: I am going to do that one. I always do chocolate cake with chocolate frosting on Holidays, but it’s time for a change. Now, I am going to check if we have enough ingredients when I make it the day before Easter!!
Oops, not chocolate costing!! Chocolate frosting!!

  • Gisela on March 12th, 2016 - 7:52am

Today, I made everyone eggs for breakfast. We didn’t have bacon with or anything, just eggs and toast. I love eggs!

  • Gisela on March 12th, 2016 - 7:53am

In December, I made homemade macorroni and and cheese. It was so yummy! Wooton would love to sing about it. Lol.

  • Gisela on March 14th, 2016 - 6:30am

Frozen pizza? Yuck! That’s disgusting!! Last Thursday, (or was it the Thursday before?) I made the best ever homemade pizza! The crust was heavenly, and easy! We put a little sausage, (from a great brand) and LOTS of cheese. I love tons of cheese on my pizza!

  • starwarsfan8 on March 14th, 2016 - 1:31pm

@Gisela: Chocolate frosting would be good but if it was white for easter that would be cool. 🙂 😛

  • marie on March 15th, 2016 - 11:39am

I was just thinking about a cake idea… vanilla cake, white frosting and Easter color sprinkles… (I like baking!)

  • Julianna on March 15th, 2016 - 6:40pm

    Marie, Great idea! Yummy!

  • Gisela on March 16th, 2016 - 6:22am

    Cool idea, Marie!! 🙂

  • marie on March 16th, 2016 - 9:18am

    @Julianna, Thanks!!:)

  • marie on March 16th, 2016 - 9:20am

another idea is a vanilla cake, chocolate frosting with a Cadbury egg on top! I think I spelled Cadbury wrong… its those chocolate eggs you get when Easter comes around… anyone heard of them?

  • Julianna on March 16th, 2016 - 10:26am

Marie, I think I know what they are. Great idea as well. Hmm, hard to choose which one is better. lol.

  • marie on March 21st, 2016 - 1:15pm

    Julianna, thanks again!!:)
Do you like baking or cooking better? In my opinion I like baking!!:)

  • Julianna on March 21st, 2016 - 2:32pm

Marie, I like baking better. So do my sissy, cousin, grandma, and mom.

  • GISELA on March 22nd, 2016 - 11:39am

    @ Marie,
Baking. I don’t know why, maybe because it doesn’t involve raw meat? I hate working with raw meet.
I made Macaroni and Cheese a month or two ago! Wooton would have sang about it! Lol, lol, lol. Too many lols! Lol. Lol again! There I go! Here’s a different meaning of laughter: ROTFL it means: rolling on the floor laughing! Okay, ROTFL!

  • marie on March 22nd, 2016 - 3:23pm

Gisela, I totally agree!! Raw meat just feels wrong!! Sometimes I make spaghetti and working with raw meat is a PAIN!!

  • marie on March 22nd, 2016 - 3:24pm

I have heard that saying before!!(ROTFL)

  • Gisela on March 22nd, 2016 - 3:50pm

    I have decided.
I will bake a chocolate cake with vanilla frosting. The outer part will look like Easter until you dig in. I will have our mini pink, yellow, light blue and light green sprinkles which are shaped like flowers. It will look Springish and Easterish.

  • Julianna on March 22nd, 2016 - 4:03pm

    Jesella, Lol. ROTFL! Lol.
I love macaroni and cheese. And I was listening to that song. I can sing it through. I wish you could hear it. I don’t like working with raw meat either! Lol.
    My ode to macaroni,
In the days of dark and dread,
    You kept me warm,
    You kept me fed. Lol!!

  • marie on March 22nd, 2016 - 5:26pm

Gisela, you won’t believe it and people think I am crazy, but I HATE cheese!!

  • marie on March 22nd, 2016 - 5:33pm

Gisela, these are some of my favorite meals and desserts I like to make…
    1. Spaghetti
    2. Chicken Wild Rice Soup (family favorite)
    3. Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup
    4. Chocolate Chip Cookies
    5. Brownies
    6. Chocolate covered strawberries
I have to think more but that’s a little bit about what I like to make!!

  • Julianna on March 24th, 2016 - 9:02am

marie, I don’t like cheese too! I love all the foods you mention. Meat loaf is one of my favorite dinners!

  • marie on March 24th, 2016 - 9:12am

  • marie on March 24th, 2016 - 10:37am

    Here’s a idea for a party w/ friends!!
Chocolate covered strawberries w/ white chocolate drizzle!!
    Mmmm!!:)

  • Julianna on March 24th, 2016 - 12:52pm

Marie, I just made chocolate strawberries! Lol.

  • marie on March 24th, 2016 - 4:41pm

Julianna, oh my I am dying for chocolate strawberries!
I haven’t had time to make any because the strawberries we got were bad so, ya…

  • marie on March 24th, 2016 - 4:42pm

I don’t like any kind of frosting… only cool whip!!

  • Julianna on March 28th, 2016 - 3:49pm

I put cool whip on hot chocolate or berries.

  • Gisela on March 29th, 2016 - 8:54am

I like meatloaf, but I don’t like making it!! I made it by myself once and added panko breadcrumbs instead of the normal bread crumbs! It actually turned out better, so now we use panko bread crumbs instead of normal ones!

  • Gisela on March 29th, 2016 - 8:55am

    @ Marie,
REALLY? I HATE bakery frosting, but homemade is good.

By the way, my cake was a success! Everyone loved it.

  • Gisela on March 29th, 2016 - 8:58am

I don’t usually get to make chocolate strawberries, but before Christmas, I made chocolate dipped pretzels! They were good. I melted chocolate chips on the stovetop, coated all the pretzels in chocolate, and placed them on a tray into the freezer for 15 minutes!! The reason I put it in the freezer is because the chocolate coating needed to harden…

  • marie on March 29th, 2016 - 2:26pm

    Julianna, that sounds delicious!!:)

  • marie on March 29th, 2016 - 2:28pm

Gisela, ya, I don’t like sugar frosting or any others just cool whip…
Good job on the cake!! Wish I was there to try it!!
