The Inspiration Station, Part 2 Devotional — The Swim Team

March 13th, 2010

After you’ve heard “The Inspiration Station, Part 2,” check out this devotional thought. (If you haven’t heard the episode, check out the Media Player starting March 13. You can also find a station in your area.)

The Swim Team

The Swim Team

By Catherine Wilson

“Come on!” “You can make it!” “Let’s go!” The shouts of the crowd were jumbled underwater, but I knew that many of the cheers were for me. I flip turned into the final lap of the race. I thrust my arms through the water, with as much precision and strength as I knew how and took a gulp of air to last me the final stretch. I could feel my muscles burning. I put all my mental energies into keeping my arms and legs going for those last few strokes. My lungs were crying for air as I stretched my arms through the water, toward the finish, until…my hand hit the wall at last! My head broke through the surface. I took a deep breath and looked up at the scoreboard. My time had improved! And…I was the last one to finish the race. My friends came around me to congratulate me for finishing. Their encouragement was my favorite part of being on the team.

I was one of the worst swimmers that season and in the next season, my skills didn’t improve much. I worked just as hard during practice, thinking I would eventually get better, but it never seemed to happen. I also got to know some of the new swimmers who were just learning. Because my friends had encouraged me in my first year, I knew that I should do the same thing for the new swimmers. I helped them learn how to the basics, and soon I got to encourage them when they swam better than me! At the end of that second season, when I was still coming in last place, I realized something. The reason I was there wasn’t to win the races; the reason I was there was to inspire others to do their best.

Like Connie in “The Inspiration Station,” I started some days feeling discouraged about the things I didn’t do well. But, like Connie, I was blessed to have friends who encouraged me along the way. My friends taught me to think about what I can really do well, which is being a friend and encouraging others.

The apostle Paul wrote that we should “encourage one another and build each other up” (1 Thessalonians 5:11). We usually think of inspiration as something we get. But what if inspiration was something that we gave to others? We can inspire others through our encouragement.

In the next week, find one person and give them encouragement. You could do this by cheering them at sports or helping them at school. You could tell a family member that you love them and believe in them. Then us know how it went in the comments below!

Cool! I’m the #1 person to comment here and the #1 Odyssey fan! I like the devotions a lot; I do competitive swimming and am really discouraged since I CAN’T SWIM very well!!

Well-hmmm, I’m trying to get with the new season. It was an ok show-but I like the classic or old AIO’s better. The show seems to move very slow-I hope there will be more characters from different backgrounds added. Old AIO had a lot of characters to make the show very interesting and helped the story move along. I now understand what the inspiration station is, but on the other hand I think it would have been more interesting in the imagination station where Matthew actually met the inventors.

  • Laura Leigh on March 13th, 2010 - 10:41am

That’s SO cool!! My brother got in on this episode!!!!

  • WES B. on March 13th, 2010 - 10:54am

Cool devotional. 🙂 I used to be on a swim team for quite some time too. In fact, I’m wearing a sweatshirt which proudly proclaims River City Aquatics 2006-2007. Anyway, I set my tape deck and recorded “The Inspiration Station Part II” today. Before hand I had nightmares about missing the show and my tapes getting jammed and eaten up lol. Awful dream, but I’m happy to say that the episode is safely stashed away with my album 51 tapes! Can’t wait till I get the set! Although, I’ll miss recording.

  • WES B. on March 13th, 2010 - 11:01am

Matthew Parker sounded awfully like Sam Johnson in some of the older classics. Did any of you pick up on that? Of course I’m not saying it was the same guy who played Matthew, I’m just saying they sound pretty similar. Of course the guy who played Sam is probably in his thirties or twenties now. That’d be pretty weird if they were the same actor. 😉 His voice would have probably changed unlike Genesis Long.

  • Alayna on March 13th, 2010 - 11:33am

this is a really great devotion. its helps me remember to encourage people, whether they feel up or down. encouragement always helps someone feel better. or help someone who does not really like you, see God through you.

  • Ryan on March 13th, 2010 - 12:32pm

Everything in Odyssey has gone so weird. I didn’t “The Inspiration Station”. It was like Odyssey entered the Twilight Zone. Nothing seems like Odyssey anymore!!!(Except Eugene). Odyssey, please go back to the way it was. Go bac to normal!!! (and get a better voice for Mr. Whittaker

  • 1 aio fan on March 13th, 2010 - 1:41pm

COOL! I’m the first to COMMENT 🙂 I LOVE AIO! 😉 I GIVE THIS EPISODE 6 STARS OUT OF TEN.:) KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK 😉

Very nice guys. I like the new music.

  • Anonymous on March 15th, 2010 - 11:01am

I think that the new characters are nice and all, but i miss some of the old ones. What’s been happening to Mandy and the Washingtons? Is Connie ever going to get married? And if so…to who? Mitch changed when he went to the FBI and doesn’t have time for her any more. Besides that I think it was a great show. My favorite character is Mortimer. He’s cool. I like the way he kind of blathers on. =)

I know it would not be quite right for Eugene, but he could do alot of good! Thanks you guys! Keep it up.

  • Bekah on March 21st, 2010 - 6:29pm

I am a big competitive swimmer myself, and sometimes this happens to me. I improve, am the hardest worke, yet I still am not as fast as the others! I still think Connie needs to move on in her life, I mean she can still work at Whit’s End; but she should get married. And Mandy, Liz and the some of the popular old characters should still be on. Where is Tom Riley? I know the actor passed, but why not get a new voice?

  • haley on March 22nd, 2010 - 10:09am

I really don’t like the new whit!!!

  • Emma on March 22nd, 2010 - 5:54pm

    Hey….
Is anybody on this homeschooled, other than Cowgirl and Sid Crosby?
If you can reply, that would be great, cuz I was on some of the other pages of whitsendblog.org, and there were a LOT of homeschoolers…. We think that they (the producers, writers etc) should make a homeschooling family!!
    Anybody else?

  • Anonymous on March 22nd, 2010 - 5:55pm

    haley, neither do i.

  • DAWN on March 23rd, 2010 - 10:32am

    Dear Adventures in Odyssey Staff,
One day, my Dad and I were talking, and the topic Adventures in Odyssey came up. Dad said that he really appreciates the show. He loves that we are so excited to listen to them and hear God’s truths. He likes that they are fun, glorifying to God, and so well done (with sounds, acting, ect.). My entire family LOVES the show. Thanks so much! =D
